If you always hope for the best while being prepared for the worst, you will never be disappointed. Always hoping for the best keeps you upbeat and optimistic. And being similarly prepared for the worst keeps you rooted in the reality that this material world is a miserable place in which old age, disease, and death are unavoidably being forced upon everyone. The devotee is always happy even in the worst case scenario because he knows that this material world is simply a temporary covering of the eternal, all-blissful reality which lies beyond it. By always remembering Krishna he fully qualifies himself to enter that higher reality, and his every moment takes him a step closer to that ultimate destination.
