Question: Is Bhakti Useless Without Initiation?

I would like kindly to ask you to clarify Srila Prabhupada's statements, which you have quoted below: "Unless one is initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, all his devotional activities are useless. A person who is not properly initiated can descend again into the animal species." and "Always thinking of Krishna means chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, but unless one is an initiated devotee he cannot do this." And then you say: "If even for an ordinary college degree one has to enroll in a university, we can understand how much even more essential it be must be for one to enroll as a disciple if he wants to attain the supreme destination." I understand and accept that to be able to enter into Krishna's adobe, the spiritual world, we should take shelter of the lotus feet of the bona fide spiritual master, be initiated by him, and serve him with love and devotion. But I do not understand how it is that unless we are initiated all of our devotional activities are useless? What exactly does Prabhupada mean by this? But if he proudly thinks that he does not need a guru and that he can perfect himself in Krishna consciousness without the help of a guru, the benefit he will receive from his devotional activities is so minuscule that it will be practically useless. We are all hankering for love, but the problem is that in this material world everyone is self-centered and therefore out to take advantage of us instead of purely loving us. This is why in our relationships we are not satisfied and are so frustrated in so many ways. Our natural psychological need for love is not being satisfied. There is where Krishna consciousness comes to our rescue. As soon as we put Krishna or God back in the center a tidal wave of pure love flows everywhere inundating everyone in an unlimited ocean of loving happiness. We can then give pure love to everyone and find the greatest satisfaction in our relationships.

Question: Why Chanting in the Brahma Muhurta?

Why chanting in Brahma muhurta i.e. morning 4 AM to 6 AM is more auspicious than chanting in some other time? I suppose chanting at any time is all-auspicious if one chants in a very secluded or serene place like New Govardhan, Australia which I have seen pictures in one of your Thoughts for the Day. Answer: Because It Is More Auspicious

It's a fact that chanting the holy names of the Lord at any time in any place is all-auspicious.  But because we are still situated within the three modes of material nature we are not able to always experience them like that. This is why we take advantage of the peaceful time of day to help us experience the all-auspicious nature of the holy names. Because of the pre-dominance of the mode of goodness during the early morning hours, there is a much more peaceful atmosphere at that time. We can capitalize on this golden opportunity by rising early, taking our bath, and fully absorbing ourselves in chanting the Hare Krishna mantra on our japa beads. Our Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains the brahma-muhurta hour as follows: "The time early in the morning, one and a half hours before sunrise, is called brahma-muhurta. During this brahma-muhurta, spiritual activities are recommended. Spiritual activities performed early in the morning have a greater effect than in any other part of the day.”—from purport to SB 3.20.46 In a conversation in Indore on 13 December, 1970 Srila Prabhupada said: "One who cannot rise early in the morning, he is not spiritually serious. That is test. Brahma-muhurta, this hour, one hour before sunrise, is very auspicious moment.” And in a letter to Radhavalbha Das from Bombay, written on 6 January 1972 Srila Prabhupada said: "Chanting japa should be done early in the morning with full concentration preferably during the brahma-muhurta time.” While it's also true that chanting in a peaceful place like New Govardhana, Australia helps us to be more absorbed in the holy names, if we will chant Hare Krishna in such a place during the brahma-muhurta hour, we will derive even more benefit from our chanting. Question: Is Srila Prabhupada the Only Spiritual Master?

All glories to you and Srila Prabhupada. I am new to Krishna Consciousness and your course. I only started in October 2014. I am confused about when and how one should accept a spiritual master. There are other websites saying that we shouldn't accept a spiritual master except for Srila Prabhupada because even though he has passed, he still lives on in his books. They say Srila Prabhupada never said for anyone else to be spiritual masters and only gave permission to eleven others to initiate on his behalf after he passed. Can you please explain the proper way of having a spiritual master?

Prabhupada Ordered His Disciples to Become Gurus

Once upon a time there was a fox who spied some really wonderful looking grapes high on a grape vine. Eager to sample those grapes he jumped as high as he could to try to reach them but fell short of the mark. He tried again and again pushing himself to jump higher and higher, but no matter how high he jumped he was still not quite able to reach the grapes. Finally defeated in his attempt to taste the grapes he declared that the grapes are sour and walked away. Recently on this planet there was present the most influential and enlightened spiritual master in world history, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Through his books, his lectures, his letters, his conversations, and his example he revealed the highest truth of Krishna consciousness, which will take anyone who understands and implements it to the highest state of spiritual perfection. Not only did he act as a guru for delivering the fallen souls of this age. He also trained his disciples how they could become gurus as well to continue with the work of delivering the fallen souls of this age after his disappearance. He specifically instructed that after his departure from this world those of his disciples who are strictly following him should continue the disciplic succession by initiating their own disciples. Some neophyte devotees who were not qualified to become gurus due to their not strictly following Srila Prabhupada's teachings became envious of those devotees who were empowered to become gurus. So they concocted a false philosophy to declare that nobody could be a guru except for Srila Prabhupada. "If I can't taste the grapes, the grapes are sour. If I can't be a guru, nobody can be a guru."  Even though the number of these disobedient foxes is very small compared to the number of devotees who are obediently following Srila Prabhupada, through putting up many web pages on the internet they are giving the false impression that there is some substantiality to their concocted views. If you tell a lie long enough, foolish people will start believing it. But those who are wise take the time and trouble to find out what is actually true before they draw any conclusions. The eleven you mentioned were instructed by Srila Prabhupada to initiate devotees as his disciples between July and October of 1977 when Srila Prabhupada was too ill to be involved with the initiations of new disciples. On 18 October 1977 just days before his departure Srila Prabhupada stated that he would no longer accept disciples, and he authorized his disciples to begin accepting their own disciples. The proper way to have a spiritual master is to find someone who is a bona fide disciple of Srila Prabhupada, is  loyal to the ISKCON institution that Srila Prabhupada created, and who has been blessed by ISKCON's Governing Body Commission (GBC) to initiate disciples. You will know that he is bona fide by seeing that he is perfectly living and speaking the Absolute Truth which is taught by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita. You should then take shelter of that spiritual master, become his initiated disciple, and fully dedicate your life to following his instructions accepting them as your very life and soul. In this way you will become fully absorbed in pure devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna and fully qualified to enter into the spiritual world when you depart from your present material body. Taking seriously to the path of Krishna consciousness means to declare war against maya or illusion on two fronts. On one hand there is the war within, which is battling it out with our material desires, conquering over them by replacing them all with spiritual desires. Srila Prabhupada describes this internal battle front as follows: "When we accept any process of self-realization, we are actually declaring war against maya, illusion, and maya is certain to place many difficulties before us." On the other hand there is the war without, defeating the bogus materialistic propaganda that has completely conquered the human society. Srila Prabhupada describes this external battle front as follows: "Preaching the cult of devotional service is something like declaring war against materialistic life.: There is a wonderful synergy between these two battle fronts. The more you conquer the maya within you heart, the more you become empowered to successfully defeat the maya without. And the more you can strongly preach against and defeat the maya in the external world, the more you will find that the maya within your heart has been conquered. So, if you will enthusiastically fight this war against maya on both fronts, putting your full faith in Sri Guru and Sri Krishna, your glorious victory in awakening your dormant Krishna consciousness and in successfully spreading the Krishna consciousness movement to the sleeping souls of this world is solidly guaranteed. ß Sankarshan Das Adhikari Fighting the War Against Maya--Riga, Latvia--25 April 2015

Question: Depend on Astrology or Krishna?

I am chanting sixteen rounds of Hare Krishna mantra japa mala every day for the past six years and attending bhakti vriksha classes ,taking bhakti shastri training, and attending temple programs. I have a doubt whether devotees should follow astrology or they should just totally depend on Krishna. Two astrologers told me that my future is not good. I will not get married soon. (Already it is too late.) If by chance I get married my married life will not be good. They told me to do some puja and fasting. They told me to worship the nine planets and do puja and fasting for them. What should I do in this situation? As I am attending so many classes and programs, my mind is not accepting to do all those rituals. My mind is telling that just depend on Krishna. He will take care of you. But my mother and brother are forcing me to do all those rituals. I think I have bad karma from my previous births. That's why I am suffering like this. Should I totally depend on Krishna?  Or should I follow the instructions of these two astrologers? Please enlighten me in this matter. Thanks. Hare Krishna!

Just depend on Krishna. Regarding astrology, Srila Prabhupada wrote to his disciple Devamaya as follows: "Regarding astrology, you should not listen to any of these so-called astrologers -- strictly avoid. Don't even see them. What is the use of seeing them? Astrology is meant for the materialist, but a spiritualist does not care for the future. Everything is dependent upon Krishna. So where is the necessity of astrology? The devotees' principle is, let there happen anything as Krishna desires. Let me remain sincere devotee, that's all. Pure devotee is never interested in this astrology.” Whatever bad karma you have will taken away when you accept initiation from the bona fide spiritual master. Therefore forget this astrology business and simply take complete shelter of Guru and Krishna. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Yashoda sees universe in Krishna's mouth Whole universe including all the nine planets are within Krishna and are working as per his directions only. Hari Bol!!!
