Question: Were We Originally With Krishna in the Spiritual World?

I have a doubt about the existence of the soul. I heard two theories about its existence.

In one I was told that we were all present with Krishna in the spiritual world and due to being envious of Krishna we were transferred to the material planets.

Today one senior devotee in ISKCON Chennai told me that the scriptures tell that from time immemorial we have had free will to either to love Krishna or to enjoy separately without Krishna.

I want to know the actual truth regarding our existence with any references so that I can show him Maharaja.

Please forgive me if I have presented my question improperly.

Hare Krishna

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
Yes, But We Foolishly Left

Both things you have heard are true. We are all the eternal residents of the spiritual world who possess the free will to remain in our natural position as Krishna's servants or to, like a foolish fish who tries to enjoy living on the land, defy our natural position by coming to this material world to try enjoy separately from Krishna.

Lesson from Power Outage in Austin
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

24 May 2015--4:20am--Last night a heavy rain/lightening storm with tornados blew through the Austin area. Heavy winds in our neighborhood knocked over trees and a wooden fence. Our temple suffered only minor damage. Now we are among 19,600 residences that are without electrical power for the last six hours. Fumbling in the dark at 4:00am trying to do our morning program, wondering how we are going to cook the Sunday feast without our electric stove/oven, I am seeing how much dependent we are on electricity for so many of the things that we do. This reminds me of how much we are even more dependent on Krishna, the supreme provider of power, for absolutely everything that we do, even for our very existence. I am hoping that for the sake of our service to Krishna that our electrical power will soon be restored and hoping even more that Krishna consciousness can become fully restored on this bewildered planet to bring the bewildered humanity back to sanity.

Question: Only Loving Krishna Satisfies the Self?

In this material world all of our relationships ultimately end up in terrible pain and frustration. Is it only the relationship with the Supreme God Krishna that gives everlasting peace and happiness?

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
When You Love Krishna, You Love Everyone Perfectly

To maintain a good relationship of proper nourishment with all the parts of your body you need to feed the belly properly. When you do that the nourishment will naturally go to all parts of your body. If you don’t feed the belly the relationship with all of your other bodily parts will not be proper.

Similarly, if you neglect to establish a loving relationship with Krishna, every other loving relationship you attempt to develop will sooner or later lead to frustration. And if you love Krishna, you will have a perfect relationship with all living beings.

Focus On Your Only Real Duty

uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

To become Krishna conscious is the perfection of life because Krishna consciousness brings you back to your original pure identity which you once relished in loving service to Lord Krishna in the spiritual world before you fell down into this miserable material existence. Therefore nothing in life really matters all that much except for regaining your lost Krishna conscious. So focus on this as your only real duty.

Question: Am I Wrong?

Once you said that Lord fulfills only those material desires which we deserve and not what we desire. If Krishna is so conditional in fulfilling our desires, then how can He in the form of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu teach us to love Him unconditionally? Isn't this cheating? If we have to totally serve Krishna unconditionally, then Krishna also must be unconditional towards us! Am I wrong?

Trying to be your servant,

Answer by Citing the Vedic Version:
Yes, You are Mistaken

Yes, you are mistaken.  And here's why:

Srila Prabhupada confirms that we get only what we deserve, not what we desire in his book the Teachings of Queen Kunti:

"Our suffering is due to our attachment. Because we are materially attached, we desire so many material things, and therefore Krishna gives us the opportunity to enjoy whatever material facilities we want. Of course, one must deserve these facilities. First deserve, then desire. Suppose I want to become king. I must have pious activities behind me so that I can become king.”

It is wrong to conclude from this that Krishna does not love us unconditionally. Krishna’s uninterrupted unconditional love for us is demonstrated at every minute by His providing all facilities for us to immediately get out of our present suffering condition in which we are completely blinded by the lust for material sense gratification.

You are thinking that Krishna should unconditionally fulfill all of our material desires. But such a thing would keep us entangled eternally in this miserable material existence. Therefore Krishna's not fulfilling all of material desires is another manifestation of His unconditional love for us.

Question: Chanting While Committing Sins

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If one is chanting the holy names of Lord and at the same he is doing sinful activity, does this mean that he is guilty of the offenses known as committing sins on the strength of the holy name?

Trying to be your servant,

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
Answer: Intentional vs. Unintentional

To intentionally engage in sinful activities and chant Hare Krishna for the purpose of neutralizing the effects of those sinful activities is called namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih, sinning on the strength of chanting, and it is the greatest offense in the discharge of devotional service.

This is different from chanting for the purpose of developing pure love of God and sometimes accidently committing sinful activities due to one's past bad habits. Of course such accidental sins are also offensive because they are disobeying the orders of the spiritual master. But they are not as bad as namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih, intentionally sinning on the strength of chanting,

I Want to Attract the Whole World to Chant Hare Krishna
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

Since the entire human civilization is becoming more and more miserable due to its ever-increasing entanglement in lust, anger, and greed, I want to do something to save these poor souls from their horrible plight. And the since the only real solution for solving all of the problems of the world is the revival of everyone's dormant Krishna consciousness, within whatever brief span of time I have available to me in my present body my desire is that I want to attract the whole world to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra so that everyone can be fully and genuinely happy.

Question: Does Every Soul Go to Yamaraja at the Time of Death?

Respected Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to You and Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you very much for your kind blessings.

With your kind permission I would like to ask a few related questions:-
After death, does each soul have to go to Yamaraja, or only human souls before taking up another body?

Do pious souls also have to go?

Hoes does one Yamaraja handle so many souls on a daily basis.

What is the time difference between two bodies?

Warm regards,
Your student

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
Answer: All Sinful Souls Go to Yamaraja

Only sinful human beings go to the court of Yamaraja. They go at the time of death to be judged and awarded suitable punishments for their sinful activities. Of course, in this age everyone is sinful engaging in all sorts of irreligious activities. Therefore nowadays practically all human beings are headed for the court of Yamaraja at the time death in order to be judged and punished.

Although upon leaving one's present body at the time of death he is immediately transferred to another body, because time is relative within that brief period of time he goes to abode of Yamaraja experiencing his time of punishment as many, many years.

Yamaraja is not an ordinary living being like you and me who can only do one thing a time. He has no difficulty multitasking in his duty of judging and punishing millions of sinful human beings.

Don't Cheat Yourself By Being a Slave of Maya
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

Don't cheat yourself by being a slave of maya or illusion. You are an eternal spiritual being qualitatively one with God. While it may appear very attractive to gratify your senses whenever they request to be gratified, the reality is that you have  nothing to do with your material senses. They are just a covering of your actual self. Therefore as long as you remain on the platform of material sense gratification you will never be able to taste or experience the genuine unlimited pleasure of your actual spiritual existence. Quasi-spiritualists talk about God and self-realization, but they take God as someone who facilitates their material sense gratification.  Such "God consciousness" is not God consciousness at all.  It is sense gratification consciousness masquerading as God consciousness.  Real God consciousness is taught both by Lord Jesus and Lord Krishna. Real God consciousness means to full surrender unto Krishna or God accepting everything in your life which is pleasing to Him and rejecting from your life whatever is displeasing to Him. This the real platform of spiritual realization, of unlimited happiness which every living needs to come to as soon as possible if they are going to be genuinely satisfied with their life. Otherwise they will remain frustrated and confused just like Arjuna was in the opening pages of the Bhagavad-gita.

Question: Stuck in a Rut. What Am I Doing Wrong?

I am touch with ISKCON for last 10 years, but I am lost in the whole process. The philosophy says ,"Chant and be happy," but the more I chant, the more disturbed I get. I am fearful, scared, lonely, not able to face situation, and many such more negative things. Can you please guide me what I am doing wrong?

I am based in Delhi. Can I go and meet some of your disciples who can guide me to come out of this situation? I want to chant 16 rounds, take initiation, and move ahead, But I am stuck.

Please help.

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
You Are Committing Offenses Against Krishna's Name

The problem is that you are committing offenses while you are chanting.  To taste the nectar of Krishna's name you must chant without offense.  The ten offenses to be avoided are as follows:

(1) To blaspheme the devotees who have dedicated their lives for propagating the holy name of the Lord.

(2) To consider the names of demigods like Lord Siva or Lord Brahma to be equal to, or independent of, the name of Lord Vishnu. (Sometimes the atheistic class of men take it that any demigod is as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. But one who is a devotee knows that no demigod, however great he may be, is independently as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, if someone thinks that he can chant "Kali, Kali!" or "Durga, Durga!"and it is the same as Hare Krishna, that is the greatest offense.)

(3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master. (This means you must be fully surrendered to the spiritual master.)

(4) To blaspheme the Vedic literature or literature in pursuance of the Vedic version.

(5) To consider the glories of chanting Hare Krishna to be imagination.

(6) To give some interpretation on the holy name of the Lord.

(7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the holy name of the Lord. (It should not be taken that because by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can be freed from all kinds of sinful reaction, one may continue to act sinfully and after that chant Hare Krishna to neutralize his sins. Such a dangerous mentality is very offensive and should be avoided.)

(8) To consider the chanting of Hare Krishna one of the auspicious ritualistic activities offered in the Vedas as fruitive activities (karma-kanda).

(9) To instruct a faithless person about the glories of the holy name. (Anyone can take part in chanting the holy name of the Lord, but in the beginning one should not be instructed about the transcendental potency of the Lord. Those who are too sinful cannot appreciate the transcendental glories of the Lord, and therefore it is better not to instruct them in this matter.)

(10) To not have complete faith in the chanting of the holy names and to maintain material attachments, even after understanding so many instructions on this matter.

It's also offensive to be inattentive while chanting.

If you will carefully avoid these ten offenses, you will experience unlimited sweetness in Krishna's names.

I will put you in touch with my disciples in Delhi so that they can help you to purely chant the names of Krishna.

Don't Take a Guru Like Getting a Pet Dog
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

In a lecture given on 29 September 1974 in Mayapur Srila Prabhupada explains the guru should not be taken as a pet dog:

"When one accepts somebody as guru, he cannot argue. That is the condition. One must be fully surrendered otherwise there is no meaning of making a guru. It is not like a pet dog, that 'Everyone has a guru, so let me have a guru.'  That is not guru. Guru means first of all the condition is pranipata, fully surrendered. Not that, 'If I like, then I shall carry your order. And if I don't like, then I shall not do it.' That is not acceptance of guru. Pranipata. First of all, we must agree. So because friends and friends talking, a friend may agree with his friend. He may not agree with. That is friendly talk. But Arjuna became disciple. Sisyas te 'ham: 'I am now Your sisya, disciple. Now there is no question of disagreeing with You. Whatever You'll say, I will accept.' So at last Krishna said, 'Surrender unto Me.' And Arjuna did it. That is the whole purpose of the Bhagavad-gita."

Srila Prabhupada's point is that unless we accept our guru in full surrender without argument, we haven't really accepted a guru.  This means also that we are not surrendered to Krishna's order and that we are also not qualified to go back to Godhead.

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
Answer: Be Prepared to Do Whatever Krishna Wants

The only qualification for being a part of the elite group who wants to bring about a spiritual revolution for the deliverance of the fallen souls on this planet is that you must be always prepared to do whatever Krishna wants. This means that you must be prepared to give up something which you may not like to give up or to accept something which you may not like to accept. If you are prepared in this way to do whatever Krishna wants, you are qualified to help bring about the respiritualization of the human society.

Becoming Strong by Acknowledging Your Weaknesses
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

Pride is our weakness, and humility is our strength. So instead of proudly being blind to your weaknesses, imagining that you are strong in every way, it is better to honestly recognize and acknowledge your weaknesses. You should find a devotee who can honestly and accurately pinpoint your weaknesses and learn from that devotee. In this way you will become truly strong.

To always keep this humble mood the devotees regularly bow down and offer their obeisances both to the deities in the temple as well as to other devotees, especially to their spiritual master. In this way they become strongly fixed in devotional service to Krishna.

Question: Does Krishna Make Us Forget Him?

Lord Sri Krishna states in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita (15.15):

"I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness."

So, would this mean that it is actually due to Lord Krishna, Himself, that the living entities forgot Him at the very beginning and therefore we are in this material world? Wouldn't this give some people the opportunity to blame God even more for their suffering? Or does this "forgetfulness" that the Lord is speaking of, only refer to the forgetfulness of one's past life, as mentioned in Srila Prabhupada's purport?

Thank you very much.
Hare Krishna.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:
He Only Gives Forgetfulness to Those Who Desire It

This refers to all kinds of forgetfulness, especially forgetfulness of Krishna. Krishna is not to blame because Krishna only gives forgetfulness to those who desire it. When a living entity stubbornly wants to misuse his minute independence by trying to be God or by trying to forget God instead of serving God, Krishna as His well-wishing friend supplies him with the necessary forgetfulness to do just that. This is Krishna’s kindness that He does not force anyone to be His devotee. He gives everyone the choice of whether they want to serve God or to forget God. So if someone chooses not to that is squarely, unequivocally their fault.

The Ever-Expanding Krishna Consciousness Movement
uploaded from ISKCON Austin, Texas

As I write these words we are making the last leg of our journey from Lithuania to Austin. It has been very refreshing on this trip to encounter Krishna conscious people in various places. In the Vilnius, Lithuania airport as we went through security one of the security personnel said, "Hare Krishna" to us. In London we met a man named Prem, a worker in the airport who has read the Bhagavad-gita and all twelve cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam of Srila Prabhupada. He is getting ready to read the Bhagavatam in its entirety again. Then in New York as we entered the security queue one of airport personnel said, "Hare Krishna" to us. These are auspicious signs that the Krishna consciousness  movement is indeed growing. In the past we did not meet Krishna conscious people as often as this. The Krishna consciousness movement will continue expanding more and more until eventually this entire planet and indeed this entire universe will become fully Krishna conscious. This is confirmed by Srila Prabhupada as follows:

"Similarly, since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krishna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna."--from the purport to Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 13, Text 32

What could be a greater adventure than a part of this greatest paradigm shift in modern world history?
